Houser Transport Wins Clean Air Award

Sam Houser, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Houser Transport, Inc. received the Executive Leader Award from Clean Air Works, in recognition of his efforts to help improve air quality in the Charlotte, N.C., region. The award was made at the 2009 Champions Luncheon, held November 10, 2009 at Johnson C. Smith University’s Metropolitan College, by the Clean Air Works coalition.

The Executive Leader Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary commitment to reducing emissions in the Charlotte region through his commitment to the Clean Air Works project. This award specifically recognizes an executive, CEO, owner or senior manager who has used his influence to change attitudes, implement emissions-reducing programs and lead by example to improve air quality at the worksite and beyond.

Mr. Houser was recognized for instituting a no-idle policy for all Houser Transport trucks and training all the company’s drivers about air quality. Idling vehicles emit air pollutants which have been linked to a wide range of environmental and health problems. According to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, “Vehicle emissions are one of the biggest contributors toward poor air quality in North Carolina. Idling wastes money and natural resources. It can damage vehicles, pollute the air, and harm our health.”

The Clean Air Works! project was launched in spring 2006 by the Regional Air Quality Board, in collaboration with the Regional Planning Alliance, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Charlotte Area Transit System, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, the Centralina Council of Governments, and the Catawba Regional Council of Governments. The project engages employers in the N.C. counties of Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, and Union and York County, S.C. in the effort to improve air quality by providing them with tools to help their employees take control of their commutes, and by assisting in retooling operations and maintenance activities to reduce emissions.
